Loch fishing

The hotel has twenty two wild brown trout lochs available to residents. Loch Sletill is regarded as one of the best lochs in the north of Scotland, and lies to the east of the hotel four miles from A897. From the main road there is a three mile drive on forestry roads and a ten minute walk. Sletill is remote and beautiful as well as being full of excellent trout - all of which are wild.

Fishing is by fly only. A wide selection of flies are available from the hotel, and our local river ghillie of fifty five years has tied all of them personally.

Salmon fishing

Salmon fishing can be arranged for the river Halladale by prior arrangement. The Halladale rises on the northern slopes of the Helmsdale watershed and empties into Melvich Bay at the north end. Excellent salmon fishing is available from mid-April all the way through to September. The beat starts at Forsinain Bridge and flows north for about two and a half miles to the junction with the River Dyke. There are 9 named pools, and the best harvest from one rod so far is six salmon and one sea trout. This was achieved on a July spate.

Stalking

Stalking can be arranged in the appropriate season for red, roe, and sika deer. The hotel has access to more than a hundred thousand acres of good stalking ground, and the stalkers have a wealth of experience and knowledge that is second to none. They will meet you at the hotel prior to your stalk and run through the safety procedures and standard range test. You will then be told about the ground you will be covering and the types of wildlife that you are likely to encounter. This makes for an unforgettable experience. Please call John at the hotel for further information.

Shooting

We can arrange rough shooting through the bordering estates for rabbit, hare, woodcock, duck and geese. The whole area is teaming with wildlife, and apart from a gun, a camera is an absolute necessity in order to capture the remote beauty of our peatlands - the last remaining wilderness in Europe.
