Only 5 minutes walking from the Forestry track, Sletill is an extremely attractive loch and has the reputation for being one of the best in the area. Larger than Leir, the main body of the loch runs SW to NE with a promontory on the north bank being a key feature. A boat is available and probably has the edge over bank fishing although this can be very productive and is safe. Fish lie all over the loch but the promontory, NW bays and eastern bays are all very popular. Sletill contains several reedbeds in open water and these are also good areas to fish.
The Sletill fish are not quite the quality they were in days gone by but the fight extremely well and provide excellent sport. On good days around 20 fish are possible in a day’s fishing and will likely include one or two fish over a pound. This is another loch with an amazing Mayfly hatch in late June/early July and imitations (both dry and nymph patterns) can be extremely productive. Otherwise black is again popular – Pennels, Kate McLarens etc. and Soldier Palmers and Invictas are also good flies.
Dry fly fishing can be productive on Sletill which also provides better sport than most lochs in conditions of bright sunlight. An excellent Loch which should not be missed. A word of warning – Sletill fish occasionally have a tendency to come short and/or take deep and it is sometimes necessary to fish a little lighter than you would elsewhere to keep sport going.
